Middle School
Grades 6-8
In the language arts program, the student is expected not only to read and understand different forms of writing, but also to use higher levels of thinking to interpret, evaluate and form educated opinions about contemporary situations and issues. Students are expected to express themselves clearly, logically and persuasively in different forms of writing and through the use of multi-media resources. 6th-8th grade students follow theme units and current issues. Student-initiated reports and class writing projects sometimes drive the content of the language curriculum; sometimes units are more subject-skills oriented.
In mathematics, experiences are provided from the following areas: number, measurement, geometry, patterns and functions, statistics and probability, logic and algebra. Realistic problems allow the students to apply each new skill as soon as they learn it. Exploration, discussion, and extension of mathematical concepts are facilitated by working in cooperative learning groups. The use of manipulatives, calculators, and estimation and mental math helps the students develop an understanding of mathematical concepts and number sense. Use of the computer is an integral component of the math program.
Science process skills are developed through the use of higher-level divergent questions, controlled experiments, problem-solving activities, and critical thinking and creative activities.
Social studies focuses on the analysis of world civilizations and comparing and contrasting diverse cultures, focusing on family structures, values, communication, economics, government and art. The health program encourages students to look closely at their own life styles and set goals to improve their well being.
