Director's Message

We have a lot to look back on as we complete the first half of our school year. It feels like we just started, but that’s before talking to the kids and seeing how far they’ve really come. We all need to continue this work together in pushing for the success of every student at AISF.

SCIENCE FAIR 2010

Round table discussions are always a great way for parents to stay connected to what is happening in the classroom. It is also a time for teachers and parents to brainstorm ideas and ways to work better together for the benefit of our children. If you did not make it to the last one this month, please mark your calendar to participate in our next one in March. Also in March we are getting ready for our annual science fair competition in Grades 3-8. Our theme this year is the environment. Our students are being encouraged to look at some of the environmental issues facing our world today. Scientific inquiry is being used to take a closer look at some of these problems and identify possible solutions. We are hoping this gives our students a greater sense of the world they live in and the impact our actions have on our environment. So your child’s participating in the science fair this year..what are some ways you can help???

1. Help with research of your child’s topic and collection of materials.

2. Discuss this topic with your child, help them become “experts” and gain a deeper understanding of the topic.

3. Find at least one resource person around that your child can interview about the topic.

4. Check science journals and timelines regularly to know when assignments are due. Also help monitor experiments and recordings.

5. Practice oral presentation and responding to questions judges might ask about topic.

6. Call or email your child’s teacher if you are unsure about anything or just to touch base.

REPORT CARDS

Report cards go out on Monday February 8, 2010. Please make it a point to see the teacher if you have any concerns or questions regarding your child’s progress. Teachers will share with you a recommended learning plan for your child if they are falling below standard in any subject area or are working well above standards in any subjects.

NEW FACES... NEW FAMILIES

We have had to say good bye to one of our teachers last month. Ms. Sue Palmer our KG/1 teacher resigned her position in January and will no longer be teaching at AISF. This was an unfortunate situation for us all, as she contributed greatly to our school this year. We however, do wish her well and all the best in her future endeavours.

We do have a new staff member who has joined our team to take on the Kg/1 class. We would like to welcome Mrs. Frances Greene and we are excited about her joining our dynamic team at AISF. We look forward to many more great achievements for our KG-1 students this year.

Some other new additions to the AISF family. We welcome this quarter three new additions to our school. Andre Adolfo in Preschool, Neve Adolfo in Grade3 and JR Karefa Kargbo in Grade 6. We look forward to your time here with us and new beginnings. Welcome to AISF and to Sierra Leone!!

AFTERSCHOOL AND ETC.

After school activities have become a big part of school life at AISF!! This past quarter we had such a variety of activities for students to choose from. More exciting were the parents and teachers who participated as students in this past quarter activities. Students were very excited to see this.

Please be reminded that any student staying after 3pm at school must be signed up for an after school club. We again ask parents to cooperate with us in this regard as we try to keep this time as safe and productive for all students. We look forward to starting another successful quarter of activities next week February 8, 2010.

Thank you for making sure you have added any additional persons authorized to pick up your child to your pick up list. The Parent directory will be sent home next week. Please advise the office if you have had a recent email or number change.

Thanks again for your continued involvement and support and looking forward to a great second term together!
