Director's Message

I have enjoyed the excitement that is skirting though the halls of AISF as the students are monitoring their science experiments and discussing results with their classmates. The Science Fair this year promises to be a great success, and the hard work of the teachers, students and parents should be recognized. We look forward to your continued support and if your are asking what your can do.... Well you can support the Science Fair in a few ways:

a) Donate a prize we can offer to our place winners
b) Recommend someone who could help judge the competition.
c) Check in on your child's science fair journal. Also, discuss the project topic with as they prepare to be questioned by the judges, do your own research and stay involved!!

March is Women's History Month, and we can't wait to celebrate all the facinating women who have impacted our world. Ms. Mills is planning a month long project to honor women from all walks of life. Check out the great display in the hallway. To all the women of the AISF family let us all continue to elevate our platform!

We are happy to welcome the Jalloh family to AISF. Wurie Jalloh joined the team of AISF preschoolers last month and we are glad to have him.

We were all saddeded by the sudden loss of Ms. Marion Alias Soufan last week. Mother of Ivana Soufan, she had become a friend to us all. Our deepest condolences to the family, and we wish Ivana our very best as she leaves Freetown, to be with her family n Lebanon.

The first event of the year for the PTO was a hit! The three coordinators-Mrs. Fortune, Ms Harleston and Ms. Mills did a great job in organizing the event. The PTO raised Le1,898,000 that evening. It was proposed that the PTO do this event Pending agreement at the next meeting. Thanks to the following families who made donations: Mackie, Konte, Criss-Couch, Bruns, M'bayo, Wahome, Kaitano, Mohammed, Fallah, Fortune, Dar & De Santis, Kpenou/Felicite, chang/Waritay, Bash-Taqi, El Chehny, Ezechukwu, Kukei and to all the families, teachers and aides who volunteered their time as well to make it a success. The last PTO meeting was held on Thursday, February 26, 2009. A lot of great ideas were discussed. but the turn out was low. We continue to urge parents to stay involved. Linda Fallah and Suzanne Bode have put together a calendar with proposed events for the remainder of the school year. We need everyone's input in making it happen. We are calling on all parent reps to contact class aprent, and help coordinate the planning of the next PTO activity.

Save the Date!!!

School fees for the second term are now overdue and now subject to late charges. If you paid fees electronically please send us a copy of the wire advice from the bank. Thanks to all parents who have already made payments.

Round Table Discussion will be held on Wednesday March 4, 2009. This is a valuable time to collaborate with our other parents, and the teacher on issues affecting your child's class. All parents are asked to attend.
Schedules for the roundtable were sent home last week and via email. The schedule is also posted on the website.
• The 2009 Science Fair for grades 3-8 will be held on Wednesday March 18, 2009. Parent participation is vital. Schedules will be sent home next week. We hope all parents will attend, and support our budding scientists.
• Our Inter –Color sports competition also kicks off this month. During the last week of the month, Pre-k –8th grade students (divided into 4 colors) compete in various games to win the championship trophy. The sports committee has met and formulated the guidelines for this year’s competition –Sportsmanship will be the theme of this year’s games.
• The date for the beach picnic is being changed from the last day of school for the spring break (Friday -April 3, 2009). This is to accommodate families who usually travel out on that day, and cannot make the picnic for that reason. The picnic will instead be held on Wednesday April 1, 2009 in the same manner. Last year we held the picnic at Hamilton Beach at the Mackie family beach house. We are hoping we could use the same place if available, or if anyone has any other suggestions we are open to that as well.
• Our Spring holiday commences on April 3, 2009. We resume school on Thursday April 16, 2009.

Parents please continue to check the website daily for reminders and the current calendar of events at AISF (www.aisfreetown.org)!! Hope to see you all here on Wednesday as we strengthen the partnership!! Thanks!
