Volume 20 FEBRUARY-APRIL, 2010 Number 5

Director's Message

As the school moves forward toward renewal of our 5 year accreditation status next school year, we have been taking time out to reflect on progress the school has made so far and areas we still need to grow. Accreditation involves the whole school community and is a continuous cycle of self improvement.

How did AISF become accredited in the first place?

•First the Self Study: The school underwent a year long soul searching self study.

•Then an objective Evaluation: The school was visited and evaluated by a team assembled by the commission

•Followed by an Action Plan: The school drew out a detailed plan for its further development and improvement.

•And finally accreditation: Accreditation was granted for the first time in 1994 and then re accreditation in 2004

So what’s next?

Our current accreditation expires in May 2011. AISF has to now prepare a renewal report and to host a Renewal visit in the Fall of 2010. The team will be looking to see what progress we have made since the accreditation visit in 2004. The Renewal report/visit will focus on 3 major areas: progress on School Improvement Plan Objectives, progress made on recommendations made by 2004 visiting team, and 3-5 measurable objectives for the next 5 years.

We need everyone’s help!! We are forming three committees that will help mark the path of the school over the next 5 years and help meet our objectives. This is your chance to take an active role and have a real voice in the development of the school. We need and encourage parents to get involved in one of the following committees:

1. Facilities/Finance Planning Committee: will look at the current and future facility needs of the school, create a short term and long term plan and budget for development of the school’s facilities. Some long term financial planning will also be discussed as well as fund raising opportunities.

3. Student Performance Committee: will look at the current objectives/action plans for student performance in the school and evaluate our progress on these objectives.

4. Health Committee: will look at the current procedures in place for providing a healthy environment for students, up to date health information and well developed health policies.

2. Marketing Committee: will do an external scan of our competition in Sierra Leone, create/implement a plan and budget to market the school more aggressively in Sierra Leone and abroad.

Do you have expertise in these areas or have great ideas please join one of these 4 committees in our planning evening on Thursday April 29, 2010 at 5:30pm. We are also looking for any architects, developers, finance, marketing consultants and health care providers that could join these committees. So please help us recruit participants from our AISF family or the larger general community.

On Thursday April 29, 2010 at 5:30pm please join us for an evening of discussion and planning for a better AISF. Bring the kids…. we will have games organized for the evening. We will also involve some of our older students in each planning committee to get their input as well. We look forward to your usual support as AISF moves forward with these self renewing activities.
