Since the start of January 2009, the 3rd to 7th grades students of AISF are working hard on their science fair projects.
THIS IS WHERE WE ARE:
Weeks 3, 4, 5.Feb. 9-27.
Conducting our experiments.
*Keeping detailed journals of observations, data, and results. The journals contain data measurements and written notes about our experiments. Parents please sign you*re your child*s journal to verify they have been sticking to their experiment timetable every week. Students may want to photograph their experiments to help in the analysis and to use on their displays. They also need to conduct their experiment procedure several times to ensure the results are accurate.
NEXT WEEK WE WILL BE HERE:
Week 6 Mar. 2-6
Writing our conclusions
*Analyzing what is shown in our experimental results, and summarizing it. . Experiments
Recommending what further studies to do
*The science fair project is a learning process. It helps students to feel, work with and understand science better. For this reason, the science fair project will constitute part of the science unit plan for March 2007. External Judges based on the discussed rubrics would assess it.
*For this year*s Science fair students are encouraged to do their projects or experiments in school. This is to enhance monitoring and guidance. All the students are assigned to mentors who have being working very hard to make sure that these young scientists stay focused. They are also guiding them to compile their research reports. The students themselves carry out the experiments/observations. Only by this way can we allow them to grow in the discipline. Remember that they could be great scientists even at their age if encouraged. Let*s join hands to achieve another successful science fair project this year.
*We are expecting a highly competitive show as all the scientists are working relentlessly on their projects. There would be two sets of had working scientists. The 3rd and 4th Grade scientists are in the first group. The 5th * 7th grade scientists are in the second group. We need a total of 8 External Judges (4 for each group).
We say a big thank you to all our parents who donated prizes to last year*s winners. We would also like parents to send in names of volunteer judges and to donate kindly for this year*s winners.

*A few weeks ago the Preschoolers discovered that February is a short month with 28 or 29 days and is a month of many events. Sukainah found out that her birthday was on the same date as President Abraham Lincoln*s and asked if he was still alive. We examined the calendar and found out that right in the middle was Valentine*s Day, followed later by President George Washington*s Birthday. Also, that both Presidents were honored on Presidents* Day in commemoration of their hard work to make America a free country.
*In line with our discussion on the Presidents of America, Barack Obama was introduced as the new president. They were surprised to learn that all three presidents were once little boys, who went to school with other children, studied hard and lived with their parents just like them. Also, that they grew up and had families of their own. When they saw the poster of President Obama with his two daughters they became very interested and someone asked, *Are his children also living in the White House?* I said, *Yes, and their mother, Mrs. Michelle Obama, as well.* I asked, *How many of you would like to be presidents when you grow up?* The unanimous response was, *Not me, not me!* All the girls said that they would like to be like their mothers.
*Our lesson on Cultural Diversity featured the Nigerian Culture. Many thanks to Mrs. Tara Yinusa for bringing the Nigerian culture into our classroom. She displayed the Nigerian flag and explained what the colors represented. She spoke briefly about the languages spoken in the different parts of the country, their national suit. We then watched Mrs. Yinusa prepare some bean balls, which she shared to the group. They were delicious!
As a follow up activity, I helped Kamal to locate Nigeria on the globe. Then every one had an opportunity to find his or her country.
We are now looking forward to some more parent participation in our classroom.
